For the sake of our soul

Dear beloved church family,

What we eat and drink never lies. What we take into our bodies eventually becomes our body and shapes our health. The same is true for our souls. What we watch and what we listen determines the health of our spiritual life. When we see what we should not see, hear what we should not hear, and then dwell on those things all day long, our souls slowly but surely become weary and unhealthy.

Not long ago, as I was filling my car with gas, I noticed a news broadcast playing on the screen at the gas station. It featured the Secretary of the Treasury testifying before a congressional hearing. I am well aware that complex and deeply intertwined interests exist on both sides of the aisle. Yet what caught my attention was not the substance of the exchange, but its tone—voices raised in anger, questions asked without patience for answers, and answers offered with little care even when questions were given. The moment was saturated with noise and hostility. I did not seek out this news intentionally. However, we inevitably see and hear many things without planning to. But if what we take in is not honorable, not marked by integrity, character and order, and most of all - not reflective of holiness, we must be ready to step away from it without hesitation.

What are you watching lately? What are you listening in your daily life? I encourage you to look to the Word of God. God’s Word is the nourishment of our souls. It is the Word that sustains and guards our spiritual health. We live in a world filled with noise. People freely say whatever they want. Even when misinformation is corrected, many still choose to speak and believe only what they want to see and what they like to say anyway. Amid all these voices, our hearts and minds can easily become unsettled and exhausted. So once again, look to the Word of God. To help you with this, I will provide three reflective questions each week related to our sermon series, so you can continue to meditate on the Word of God and let it nourish the best of your spiritual life.

Dear brothers and sisters, listen not to the loudest voices of the world, but to the voice of the Holy Spirit. And remember this: the voice of the Holy Spirit is not heard just anywhere. It is heard by those who dwell in the Word, by those who continually look to Scripture. Today, once again, place yourself before God’s Word. Let the Word cleanse your eyes, open your ears, and guard your soul. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly (Colossian 3:16).

In Christ’s love,
