Day 6: Hometown Folk 

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:1-6a

In Day 6, we are brought face-to-face with one of the quietest yet most sobering tragedies in the Gospel story: the people who knew Jesus best recognized Him least. When Jesus returned to His hometown, the people were astonished at His wisdom and works. Yet their amazement did not become faith. Instead, it became resistance. They said, in essence, “We know Him. We know His family. We know His past.” And because they believed they knew Him, they stopped listening to Him. This is a warning not only about Nazareth but about us.

There is a kind of spiritual danger that only long-time believers face: not ignorance of Christ, but over-familiarity with Him. “We may know Scripture well. We may know doctrine clearly. I already know that passage. I’ve heard that sermon.” Yet it is possible to know all these things and still not truly see Jesus. The hometown crowd teaches us that assumptions can blind the soul. They assumed Jesus was only what they remembered Him to be. They could not accept that the boy they once watched grow up was now the Messiah standing before them. Their familiarity became a wall that faith could not pass through.

One of the most striking lines in that Gospel scene is that Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. Usually people are amazed at Jesus but here, the roles are reversed. The Lord Himself marvels, not at faith, but at its absence in those who should have recognized Him first. This reflection invites us to a gentle but searching question: Has Jesus become too familiar to us to still be wondrous? Faith is not sustained by novelty, but it is sustained by humility. The humble heart remains teachable. It approaches Christ not as a subject already mastered, but as a living Lord still revealing Himself.

Let us therefore pray: Lord, deliver me from the illusion that I already know You fully. Keep my heart tender, my mind open, and my spirit expectant. Let me never grow so familiar with Your name that I lose awe at Your presence. Surprise me again with who You are.

May we never become hometown people to Jesus, close enough to hear Him, yet closed enough to miss Him.
