Day 4: John the Baptist

Scripture Reading: John 1:29-34

Beloved in Christ,

As we reflect on Day 4 of Jesus the Stranger, we are invited to step into the wilderness alongside John the Baptist, that bold and faithful forerunner whom God raised up to prepare the way of the Lord. The prophets had long foretold that a messenger would come before the Messiah, and in John we see that promise fulfilled, echoing the ancient words of Isaiah and Malachi. God’s timing is never hurried, never delayed. He fulfills His Word in perfect faithfulness. John’s ministry in the wilderness near the Jordan River reminds us that renewal often begins in lonely places. The wilderness is where distractions fade, where hearts become honest, and where God speaks clearly. There John calls people to repentance, not shallow regret, but a deep turning of the soul toward God. His message is urgent because the kingdom of heaven is near. In other words, when God draws close, our hearts must awaken.

What is striking is John’s courage. He does not soften truth for comfort or popularity. He speaks to the powerful as boldly as to the poor, even confronting rulers such as Herod Antipas. His life teaches us that faithfulness to God must never bow before human approval. True ministry is not measured by applause but by obedience. Yet John’s greatest testimony is his humility. Though crowds gather around him, he refuses to take the place that belongs to Christ. He declares that he is only a voice, not the Savior. In this, John models the heart every servant of God must seek: a life that points away from self and toward Jesus. When Christ increases and we decrease, the gospel shines most clearly.

Dear friends, John the Baptist stands before us not only as a figure of history but as a spiritual guide. His voice still calls across the centuries: Prepare the way of the Lord. May we examine our hearts, lay down our pride, and welcome Christ anew. For whenever we truly repent and turn to Him, the wilderness becomes a place of grace, and the path is made ready for the King.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you were chosen by God and anticipated by the prophets, including your cousin John. Baptize me with your Holy Spirit and put testimony on my lips that you are God's chosen one, reconciling the world to yourself.
