Day 38: Jesus (Part One)

Scripture Reading: Mark 15:33-39

Mark 15:33–39 draws us into one of the most sacred and sobering moments of the Gospel. At midday, darkness covers the land, as if creation itself is bearing witness to the suffering of Christ. From the cross, Jesus cries out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” In this moment, Jesus enters fully into the depth of human brokenness. He experiences the weight of sin and the reality of separation not for His own sake, but for ours. The One who knew perfect communion with the Father steps into our place of distance so that we might be brought near.

And yet, even in His suffering, He says, “My God.” This is not the absence of faith, but faith holding on in the darkest hour. Many of us know what it is like to feel that God is distant. In those moments, this passage reminds us that Christ has already gone there before us. We are never alone in our suffering. When Jesus breathes His last, the temple curtain is torn in two. What was once closed is now open. Through His sacrifice, the way to God has been made. And in a surprising confession, a Roman centurion declares: “Truly this man was the Son of God.” At the cross, what appears to be defeat becomes the place of greatest revelation. Because Jesus was forsaken, we are never ultimately abandoned. Even in our darkest moments, God is still at work.

Dear RockSpring Church, today is Maundy Thursday. Please join us online worship service at 7:00 pm with your communion element prepared. And tomorrow, we will have Good Friday service at 8:00 pm joining together both 11:00 am and 2:00 members. We will have a time of praise, reflection, words and prayer. Come and join us.

Prayer:

Jesus Christ, you who are truly divine and truly human, thank you that in your body you reconciled heaven to earth, God to people, people to one another, and all of us to creation. Tough you were abandoned to suffer the worst humanity conceived of, you offered me your best gift – eternal life. May that life overflow in and through me right here and now.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Won Kim

Lead Pastor of RockSpring Church
