Day 18: Chief Priest, Teachers of the Law, and Elders
Scripture Reading: Mark 12:1-12
The confrontation between Jesus and the chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders reminds us that religious leadership can drift away from God’s heart while still maintaining religious authority. In the parable of the wicked tenants (Mark 12:1–12), the leaders believed the vineyard belonged to them, forgetting that they were only stewards of what God had entrusted. Instead of welcoming the Son, they rejected Him because His presence threatened their control and influence.
This passage invites us to examine our own hearts. In ministry and in the life of the church, it is easy to become more concerned about protecting positions, traditions, or influence than faithfully serving the Lord. Yet the vineyard is never ours, it always belongs to God. We are simply caretakers of His work and His people. The good news is that even though the “builders rejected the stone,” God made that rejected stone the cornerstone. Human rejection cannot stop God’s redemptive plan. Therefore, as leaders and disciples of Christ, our calling is to remain humble, continually surrendering our authority, ministries, and ambitions to the true owner of the vineyard, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Prayer:
Father, may your kingdom come in all of its fullness in my heart and home. Displace any vain attempt to set up any own kingdom, and welcome instead my surrender in your Holy Presence and kindly leading.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Won Kim
Lead Pastor of RockSpring Church
