What is advent?

From the Pastor to you:

As the church enters the season of Advent, we step into a sacred time of waiting, anticipation, and hope. Advent is more than a calendar marking the days before Christmas; it is a spiritual journey that calls us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ—not only as a child in Bethlehem, but as the Lord who comes to dwell within us and to reign in our lives. In the midst of a world rushing toward holiday celebrations, Advent invites us to slow down, to reflect, and to listen for the voice of God. It reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, even when ours feels hurried. In this season, we are invited to embrace four key movements:

Hope – We remember the promise of God’s salvation, the hope that sustains us through our fears, our doubts, and our uncertainties. The prophets of old waited, and we too are called to wait with faith, trusting that God’s promises never fail.

Peace – Advent challenges us to seek reconciliation, both with God and with one another. As we prepare for the Prince of Peace, we are called to lay down burdens of anger, resentment, and pride, allowing God’s peace to shape our hearts.

Joy – Even in waiting, Advent reminds us that joy is not dependent on circumstance but on the presence of Christ. The joy of the season comes from knowing that God’s love is with us, that light shines in the darkness, and that nothing—not even our brokenness—can separate us from Him.

Love - Advent reminds us that God’s coming into the world is the greatest act of love. Emmanuel—God with us—is God’s invitation to experience His unfailing, sacrificial love. This love calls us not only to receive but also to give: to love our neighbors, our families, and even those who are difficult to love. Advent is the season to reflect on how God’s love transforms us, softens our hearts, and empowers us to be conduits of that love in a world longing for compassion.

As a special part of our celebration, our RockSpring SLC leadership will light the Advent candles each Sunday. As we light the Advent candles, let each flame remind us that God’s light cannot be extinguished. Let each week’s reflection draw us closer to the heart of Jesus, who comes to bring hope, peace, joy, and love to a weary world. May this Advent season awaken our hearts to the miracle of Emmanuel—God with us—so that when Christmas morning comes, we are not only celebrating a memory but living in the reality of God’s abiding presence.
