Day 12: The Pharisees Again

Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:9-13

In this passage, Jesus does something that unsettles the religious establishment; He eats with tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees are disturbed because He associates too closely with the wrong people. The table becomes the battleground. For the Pharisees, holiness meant separation. Righteousness meant careful distance from moral and ceremonial contamination. But for Jesus, holiness is not fragile. It is contagious. He does not become unclean by sitting with sinners; rather, His presence begins to cleanse and restore them. This is where the Pharisee reappears not merely as a historical character, but as a spiritual temptation within us.

We may not openly criticize Jesus for showing mercy, but we can subtly resent it. We can quietly measure who is worthy of grace. We can protect our religious reputation more than we protect the wounded. We can prefer sacrifice, religious performance over mercy costly compassion. When Jesus quotes Hosea, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” He is not dismissing devotion. He is reordering it. True devotion to God expresses itself in compassionate pursuit of the lost. The scandal of the gospel is not that sinners are called to repent. The scandal is that Jesus sits with them first. And here is the grace: we are at that table too. We are not the healthy observing the sick. We are the ones who needed the Physician. The Pharisee “again” is not merely out there; he lives in us whenever we forget how much mercy we have received. May the Lord give us hearts shaped more by His compassion than by our caution. May our churches be known not for guarded purity alone, but for welcoming grace that reflects the heart of Christ.

Pray:

Lord, Lead away from self-satisfaction and into a deeper understanding of your grace and mercy. May the good news of your life, death, resurrection, Jesus Christ, spill over out of my heart and into the world.
