Day 10: The Teachers of the Law

Scripture Reading: Mark 2:1-12

In Mark 2:1–12, the house is full. Crowds press in. Four friends tear open the roof. A paralyzed man lies before Jesus. Faith is visible. Hope is desperate. And seated inside the house are the teachers of the law. They are not on the outside opposing. They are inside, observing. Watching. Evaluating. When Jesus says, “Son, your sins are forgiven,” they begin reasoning in their hearts:“Why does this man speak like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

What is striking is that their theology is correct. They are right, only God can forgive sins. As teachers of the Law, they know Exodus, Leviticus, the sacrificial system. They understand holiness. They understand blasphemy. But they do not understand Jesus. The tragedy of this passage is not that they lack knowledge. It is that their knowledge does not lead them to worship. Instead of asking, “Could God be doing something new?” they conclude, “This cannot be God.” They are close to the miracle yet far from faith.

This is the question for us: When Jesus exercises authority in ways that stretch our categories, do we celebrate or do we retreat into silent judgment? When grace interrupts our theological systems, do we worship or do we harden? The teachers of the law remind us that proximity to Scripture is not the same as surrender to Christ. Knowledge must lead to humility. Orthodoxy must lead to openness before the living Lord. May we never become so committed to defending God that we fail to recognize Him. “Lord, keep us not only learned, but believing. Not only accurate, but adoring.”

Heavenly Father, thank you that your Son has both the authority to forgive sins as well as the desire to heal us of sickness. May your kingdom come and your will be done here on earth, in all of its fullness.
