Day 36: The Chief Priests, Teachers of the Law, and Elders (Part One)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 27:32-44

At the foot of the cross, we encounter a deeply unsettling scene not merely of suffering, but of spiritual blindness at its peak. The very people entrusted with recognizing God’s work, the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders, stand before Jesus and mock Him. Their words drip with irony: “He saved others; he cannot save himself.” What they fail to see is that Jesus does not save Himself precisely because He is saving others.

This moment reveals something profound about the human heart. The religious leaders are not lacking knowledge; they are lacking humility. They know the Scriptures, yet they cannot recognize the fulfillment of those Scriptures unfolding right before their eyes. They demand a Messiah who will come down from the cross in power, but God has chosen to reveal His power by remaining on the cross in sacrificial love.

Their mockery exposes a deeper temptation that still confronts us today: we often want a God who proves Himself on our terms. “Come down from the cross… then we will believe.” But true faith does not begin after undeniable proof, it begins in trust, even when God’s ways confound our expectations. The cross does not look like victory; it looks like defeat. Yet this is the very place where salvation is being accomplished.

There is also a sobering warning here for all of us. It is possible to be deeply religious, and yet stand in opposition to the very work of God. Even in this scene of rejection, Jesus remains silent. He does not retaliate. He does not come down. He stays. He stays for them. He stays for the crowd. He stays for us. The cross reveals a Savior who refuses to abandon His mission, even when misunderstood, mocked, and rejected. And in that steadfast love, we see the heart of God, a love that endures not because it is recognized, but because it is true.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I see divine love on display in the cross. The descent of your Son shows me the true nature of your power, that of humility and self-empowering. May my life be marked by such love, with a deep commitment to you my neighbors, even when they be found in what seems to me to be the strangest of places.
