Day 35: The Chief Priests and Their Officials

Scripture Reading: John 19:4-16

In this passage, the chief priests, those entrusted with spiritual leadership become the very ones who reject Jesus. Their cry, “Crucify Him,” reveals not ignorance, but hearts shaped by fear, control, and a refusal to accept a Messiah who did not fit their expectations. This is what makes the moment so sobering: deep religious knowledge does not guarantee a surrendered heart. They knew the Scriptures, yet missed the Savior. When Jesus threatened their authority and exposed their hearts, they chose to protect their position rather than bow in repentance.

We are not so different. We may follow Christ outwardly, yet resist Him inwardly especially when His will challenges our comfort, our plans, or our sense of control. In subtle ways, we can echo their rejection by placing something else on the throne of our lives. Yet even in their rejection, Jesus remains sovereign. He is not overpowered. He is willingly laying down His life. The cross is not a defeat, but the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan.

This passage invites us to honest reflection: Is Jesus truly King in our lives, or only when it is convenient? The good news is that the One who was rejected still extends grace. And today, we are invited not to resist Him but to surrender again, and let Him reign fully in us. Be Blessed!

Prayer

Lord, I know that your authority challenges any other claims to rule, whether they be political leaders or the inner claims of my heart. Send your Spirit to remove any idols vying for reign, and to enthrone you, King Jesus, as the rightful ruler of my life.

Grace and Peace,
