Day 29: Caiaphas, the chief priests, and the Sanhedrin.
Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:57-68
Jesus stands before the most religious leaders of His time; men who thought who knew the Scriptures well, yet they fail to recognize the One to whom those Scriptures point. It reminds us that being close to religion is not the same as knowing God. The Sanhedrin was not seeking truth; they were protecting their position. Their hearts were already decided. And if we are honest, we can fall into the same pattern; listening selectively, holding tightly to our assumptions, and resisting Jesus when His truth challenges us.
In contrast, Jesus stands with quiet authority. He remains silent before false accusations, yet speaks clearly when asked about His identity. He does not defend Himself, but He does reveal truth. The One they judge is, in reality, their Judge. There is a deep irony here: the true High Priest is condemned by false priest. Yet Jesus willingly endures it. His silence is not weakness, rather it is surrender to the Father’s will. His suffering is not defeat but it is the path to our redemption.
This passage invites us to examine our hearts. Are we open to Jesus as He truly is, or only as we want Him to be? Are we willing to be corrected by His word? It also comforts us. When we are misunderstood or wrongly judged, we remember that Christ has stood in that place. He knows, and He remains faithful. And ultimately, it leads us to worship:The One who was mocked now reigns. The One who was condemned is now exalted. May we walk humbly before Him, allowing His truth, not our assumptions to shape our lives.
Prayer:
Lord, in your Word, I read how you faced unjust men in power with humility and honesty. Remind me that irrespective of whether those in power today rule justly or unjustly, the desires and goals of this world are not mine. Help me to walk and talk respectfully, with humility and honesty, just as Jesus did, so that others may recognize me as your follower.
Grace and Peace,
